The way light streams from one source and lands and scatters across the human face is what I like to capture when I’m painting. When I first started painting, high contrast lighting was my first instinct. I wanted drama, something theatrical, something mysterious, which is still present in some of my recent work. Then I started painting with daylight, and my concept has been much clearer ever since.
Daylight interacts with human flesh differently than light from a desk lamp or fluorescent overhead lights. There is nothing like the light that streams through the kitchen window in the early afternoon. This is the light I paint in, because it presents these people in an honest way. The shadows aren’t concealing anything, and everything else is shown in the plain light of day.
The people in my paintings are not sharing their world with their viewers, but they are instead, engrossed in an unexceptional activity. This is where my oral fixation comes in. I can’t escape my fascination with the mouth; it’s where all the action is. It’s the way the jaw fluctuates as this person is chewing, the way the musculature in the human face scrunches, binds, folds, and moves with the skin as a bite is taken.
